A survey was conducted, which showed that the watchful waiting in the treatment of prostate cancer was increasing tremendously. After getting his diagnosis, a patient was recommended for surgical removal of his prostate. A second opinion ruled out surgery as an option because the genomic testing revealed that his cancer was non aggressive, making him a candidate for active surveillance, also called "watchful waiting." This meant that no need for surgery or radiation anymore.
New genetic testing helps doctors to give a more specific diagnosis to patients for their cancers as seen here:
It was concluded by researchers that without treatment, the low-risk prostate cancer had a favorable prognosis. The new genetic testing helps doctors to give a more specific diagnosis to patients for their cancers. Watchful waiting is not dangerous or irresponsible as long as there’s close communication between patients and doctors and with regular checkups. The watchful waiting approach avoids unnecessary comorbidities associated with prostate cancer therapies. Scientists also suggest that with more research, some forms of cancers such as follicular non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, early-stage breast cancer, a type of uterine cancer, and bladder cancers that are uncommon can potentially gain from the active surveillance approach. Active surveillance approach is due to the advancement in the genome and testing of the genetics of patients.
