The primary radiation treatments for cancer are internal radiation therapy and external beam radiation therapy treatments. Radiotherapy seeds are given as treatment to patients with early-stage prostate cancer that is still contained in the prostate. An enlarged prostate will be treated with hormone therapy for three months before radiotherapy treatment to shrink the prostate. Patients with the high-grade type of prostate cancer are treated using both external beam and internal radiation therapies.
When external beam radiation treatment is administered on a patient, there is no radioactivity and therefore no precautions required. Internal radiation treatment involves using liquid, pills, implants or a temporary source for carrying radiation into the body to destroy cancer cells. A patient who underwent prostate seed implant where radioactive seeds are left in the body for a period of time. The seeds emit low amounts of radiation as they work on cancer cells, meaning that the patient will have the radioactive seeds in their body when discharged after treatment.
